Summary

Augustine Moreau's blood-parents know her destiny before she even takes her first breath: the perfect host for the devil, born into a world steeped in sin. Desperate to disrupt the chain of events, they consult the fates and ultimately decide to abandon her, believing it to be their best chance to alter her path. Little do they realize, their decision may be the very thing that seals the prophecy’s fate.

Adopted from a group home for the magically inclined into a family at the age of 10, Augustine remembers little of her early childhood, a gap that may contribute to her troubled behavior as she grows up. With an extensive library of grimoires and texts on the history of magic and monsters, she absorbs information like a sponge and is quickly made top of her class at Aleister Crowley's school for Gifted Children, where she struggles with self-restraint paired with perfectionism. On multiple occasions, she has to be physically dragged from her spellwork due to the potential harm caused to herself or others.

During her first year, Augustine leaves campus one night with a bag full of supplies and heads into the forest. There, she conjures a powerful form of a devil—one whose name she still can’t place—and finds herself at an unfortunate crossroads: live or die. The terms of the encounter none of which she has ever explained. The devil leaves a scorch mark between her shoulder blades, which later heals into an unusual symbol. The mark burns continuously until a week later, when Augustine finally asks for help. By then it’s too late—the mark has festered for too long. She doesn’t realize the curse’s full effects until a year has passed; among other changes, the devil’s mark altered her brain chemistry, making large amounts of blood an aphrodisiac and preventing her from tending to serious wounds if someone is injured.

This self-destructive behavior of constantly searching for more power with little thought of consequence catches the attention of Raíz, a multidimensional being who promises to rid her of this curse in exchange for agreeing to a blood pact. Blinded by the prospect of more power and freedom, she agrees. And forgets.

Powers condensed, Augustine is assigned a new name: Sloth Bear.

While she has lost access to her other magic, she's still a force to be reckoned with. As a witch, she could take down formidable foes and conjure demons to use for their power. Working for Raíz, she's just as dangerous even without her skills as a conjurer, her magic a pipeline to the dark arts.

TAPETUM LUCIDEM (EYESHINE) happens so randomly that it's unclear to others whether it happens at all, her eyes reflect light in the dark for under a few seconds at a time. (leftovers from multiple demonic possessions).
